If you want to keep your child’s smile healthy and strong, a regular six-month teeth cleaning and oral exam from San Marino Pediatric Dentistry is the best option.
During your child’s regular six-month cleaning, one of our dental assistants will examine their mouth, clean tartar and plaque from their teeth, buff and polish their smile, and floss to remove any remaining debris from their teeth. Then, Dr. Choi will perform an oral exam to check for any signs of common pediatric dental health issues. X-rays may also be recommended, but only if Dr. Choi deems them necessary, and if you approve.
Fluoride treatments are a great way to prevent the development of cavities, and in some cases, it may even be possible to reverse the decay. A fluoride treatment consists of a fluoride-rich gel or paste that is applied directly to your child’s teeth after a cleaning. The high concentration of fluoride attracts minerals to your child’s enamel, strengthening their teeth and fighting back tooth decay. The process is fast and non-invasive, and is a great preventive measure for kids.
We also offer sliver diamine fluoride (SDF) which can be used as an alternative to dental fillings in baby teeth with small cavities. In some cases, SDF can stop the progression of the decay until the baby tooth naturally falls out.
Dental sealants are a great way to prevent cavities. With sealants, you can keep your child’s mouth free of tooth decay and ensure their teeth remain strong for years to come. Sealants are usually applied to the back teeth, as the molars and premolars are more susceptible to decay. This treatment consists of a thin layer of dental resin that is applied directly to each tooth.
This resin is applied as a liquid, and then hardened using a UV light, creating a strong, transparent plastic barrier. The sealant resin stops bacteria, acid, and food particles from contacting your child’s tooth directly, preventing the formation of cavities. With proper application, sealants can protect your child’s teeth for up to 10 years, making them a great option if you’d like to safeguard your child’s oral health.
